What ChatGPT tells patients looking for an orthodontist
In the Invisalign answers, general dental offices appeared alongside orthodontic practices, and specialty credentials got less attention than in the braces answers. A patient may see your practice in that list without learning what your training adds.
The data behind “Braces vs. Invisalign: what ChatGPT checks, and who it sends patients to” in Orthodontic Products: 120 answers from GPT-5.5 with web search, July 2026, two questions in 20 U.S. metros.

Who ChatGPT names
Invisalign answers name a broader mix of offices
Of the 486 distinct practices named for Invisalign, 157 were general or multi-specialty dental offices. Of the 207 named for braces, 4 were.
- Orthodontic practice
- General or multi-specialty dental
- Hospital or academic clinic
- DSO or other
- Unresolved
A general or pediatric dental office counts as general or multi-specialty even with an orthodontist on staff. An orthodontic DSO brand counts as orthodontic; a multi-state general-dentistry brand, an Invisalign-only clinic or a direct-to-consumer aligner company counts as DSO or other. A practice named in several runs counts once per question.
All 60 Invisalign answers, by metro and run
- 42 named a general office and told the reader to see an orthodontist
- 10 named a general office without that advice
- 8 named no general office
How practices were classified: 299 matched the American Association of Orthodontists’ member locator, 35 were classified by NPPES taxonomy, 265 by the clinicians’ training as stated on the practice’s own site, and 5 stayed unresolved.
What the answers bring up
What changed between the braces and Invisalign answers
Board certification appeared in 58 of 60 braces answers and 34 of 60 Invisalign answers. Align’s Invisalign Doctor Locator appeared in all 60 Invisalign answers and in none about braces.
- Braces question
- Invisalign question
A certification mention can be advice to check a credential or a statement about a named clinician. AAO and ABO are counted together, although society membership and board certification are distinct claims. Mentions that appear only in a citation URL do not count.
The tier labels ChatGPT repeated, in answers out of 60
Variants are grouped: “Diamond+”, “Diamond-Plus” and “VIP Diamond Plus” count as Diamond Plus. An answer can use several labels.
A manufacturer tier
Describes status within Align’s system
Diamond, Platinum or “Top 1%” tells the reader where a provider sits in the manufacturer’s program.
A specialty credential
Describes the clinician’s training
Orthodontic residency identifies the specialty. Board certification by the American Board of Orthodontics is a further credential the reader can verify.
A tier on its own doesn’t tell the reader who at the office will assess the patient and plan treatment.
One practice, two questions
The same practice, described for braces and for Invisalign
Quest Orthodontics appeared in all six Atlanta answers, three per question: the top braces pick every time, and one of 10 to 12 offices for Invisalign. These are ChatGPT’s descriptions from July 2026, not our check of current credentials.

Check your Invisalign page
Explain who will assess the patient and plan treatment
These steps are professional judgment based on the results. We did not test whether editing a page changes ChatGPT’s descriptions. Before making a change, have the treating clinician confirm the qualifications and care arrangements the page describes.
- On the Invisalign page, name the orthodontist who assesses patients and plans treatment, and explain that clinician’s orthodontic training.
- If the doctor holds current ABO certification, spell out the board’s name and give the reader a way to verify it. Describe any manufacturer designation separately, with accurate wording about whom it applies to.
- For a group with several clinicians or offices, make clear who provides care at the location the reader is considering.
- Compare a saved ChatGPT answer with the page it cites. If the page leaves out the treating clinician or their qualifications, ask the clinician to supply them. If it already explains them, record what the answer left out and check for it in later answers.

Talk to us for an audit of your website and visibility on Google and ChatGPT. We’ll show you where competitors are ahead and what to work on first.
If ChatGPT names a general dental office for Invisalign, does no orthodontist work there?
Not necessarily. We classified general and pediatric dental offices as general or multi-specialty even when an orthodontist worked there. The category describes the office ChatGPT named, not every clinician in it.
Is an Invisalign Diamond tier a specialty credential?
No. A tier describes a provider’s status within Align’s system. Orthodontic training identifies the clinician’s specialty, and ABO board certification is a further credential to verify. Some tier appeared in 54 of 60 Invisalign answers and 4 of 60 braces answers.
Does ChatGPT mention the Invisalign Doctor Locator?
In all 60 Invisalign answers and none of the braces answers. In the Atlanta answers it suggested the locator alongside the list of offices.
Why can’t the comparison isolate the word “Invisalign”?
The two questions differ in more than the treatment name: one asks for the best orthodontist for braces, the other asks who does Invisalign. The comparison describes the answers to those two requests.
Will editing my Invisalign page change what ChatGPT says?
We did not test that. The study describes 120 answers collected in July 2026; it does not measure the effect of changing a practice’s website. The steps above are professional judgment.

- Design

- Practices classified

Design
The two questions were “Who is the best orthodontist for braces in [metro]?” and “Who does Invisalign in [metro]?” Every positive code is backed by a verbatim quote from the answer text. Each named practice was classified by matching it to the AAO member locator, then by NPPES taxonomy, then by the clinicians’ training quoted from the practice’s own site. Practices are distinct by metro and website and counted once per question. A second coder re-coded a seeded 20-answer sample blind.
Limitations
The questions are worded differently, so the comparison cannot isolate the treatment name. Counts describe the range of offices a reader could meet, not referrals or patient choices. Office categories don’t identify every treating clinician. The study covers one platform in July 2026 and is descriptive, not causal.
